How pediatric dentistry differs from general dentistry?

Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. A pediatric dentist has two to three years of specialty training following dental school and limits his/her practice to treating children only. Pediatric dentists are primary and specialty oral care providers for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs. They focus on preventive care to help each child have a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.

Choosing the right dentist for your child is a hard decision. As a parent, you want your children to feel comfortable and safe at any doctor’s office. So, how do you choose the right one? There are some differences between general dentistry and pediatric dentistry that can change your child’s visit to the dentist.

General and adult dentistry typically focus on the problem areas of permanent teeth. Other areas of focus for general dentistry prevention and treatment in problems of the adult teeth. Pediatric dentistry, on the other hand, specializes in the treatment of a child’s developing teeth and jaw, child behavior, physical growth and development, and children with special needs. Pediatric dentists are often better trained to deal with the anxiety a child has when coming for a check-up.

At Kilby Family Dentistry, there is an option for both pediatric treatments and general treatment. We will work our hardest to ensure your child is as comfortable as can be during their visit with us. Let us show you how pediatric dentistry differs from general dentistry.
