What’s the Best Toothpaste for my Child?

Tooth brushing is one of the most important tasks for good oral health. Many types of toothpaste, however, can damage young smiles. They contain harsh abrasives, which can wear away young tooth enamel. When looking for a toothpaste for your child, make sure to pick one that is recommended by the American Dental Association as shown on the box and tube. These kinds of toothpaste have undergone testing to insure they are safe to use.

As a parent, you want what’s best for your family- including the toothbrush and toothpaste they use every day.

If you’ve ever walked down the dental aisle at the store and wondered which products are best for your kids, we’ve taken one thing off your “to-research” list. Here, we’ve put together a simple shopping list of all ADA-Accepted products for children.

The ADA Seal is your guarantee of safety and effectiveness in toothpaste for your children (and everything else). Every product with the Seal has been thoroughly evaluated by independent experts to make sure it meets the highest standards. In fact, to earn the Seal, companies often have to exceed what is required by law. Products that don’t meet these rigorous guidelines don’t get the Seal, period.

Remember, children should spit out toothpaste after brushing to avoid getting too much fluoride. If too much fluoride is ingested, a condition known as fluorosis can occur. If your child is too young or unable to spit out toothpaste, consider providing them with fluoride-free toothpaste, using no toothpaste, or using only a “pea size” amount of toothpaste.
