Comparing Heart Disease and Periodontal Disease
You may not think that the health of your gums can contribute to heart health. People with periodontal disease may become a higher risk for heart disease and have nearly twice the risk of having a fatal heart attack.
Why is there a connection between the two?
Studies support the link between Periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that oral bacteria enters the blood through inflamed gums and causes small blood clots that contribute to clogged arteries. Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by Periodontal disease contributes to the buildup of fatty deposits inside heart arteries.
