What is Crown Lengthening Surgery?

Crown LengtheningThere are two different types of Crown Lengthening Surgery:

  • Your tooth may be decayed or broken below the gum-line so that Dr. Kilby does not have proper access to repair the tooth. He will discuss Functional Crown Lengthening Surgery with you and tell you details about how it can be performed.

  • Esthetic Crown Lengthening Surgery can be performed to improve a “gummy” smile, to even out uneven gum levels, or make “short” teeth appear longer.

Functional Crown Lengthening Surgery

With Functional Crown Lengthening Surgery, the gum is lifted and rolled back creating a “gum flap”. The gum tissue and sometimes the underlying bone surrounding the broken/decayed tooth (or teeth) is then re-contoured so that an adequate amount of healthy tooth is exposed. This procedure provides Dr. Kilby with the necessary space between the supporting bone and crown portion of the tooth in order to properly restore the tooth/teeth.

Esthetic Crown Lengthening Surgery

With Esthetic Crown Lengthening Surgery, again the gum is left and rolled back creating a “gum flap”. Excess bone and tissue is then reshaped exposing more of the natural tooth and/or to even out your gum-line so that all teeth appear to be the same size.
